9 - days Fish River Canyon Hiking trip

We start our tour in Windhoek and make our way South to Ai-Ais where we start our hike in the Fish River Canyon. From here we go back to Windhoek via Sossusvlei and Sesriem Canyon. The Fish River Canyon is located in the south of Namibia. It is the largest canyon in Africa, as well as the second most visited tourist attraction in Namibia. It features a gigantic ravine, in total about 100 miles long, up to 27 km wide and in places almost 550 meters deep.
The Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon worldwide after the Grand Canyon in the USA. The Canyon forms part of the state-run Ais-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. Entrance to the Park is situated 10 kilometers from the well-known viewpoint of Hell`s Bend at the Hobas Restcamp. Visitors have to report here. It is important to know that during the summer month the Canyon hike is closed due to the heat. The Fish River Hiking Trail can be conducted during the months April – September and can be completed within 4 to 5 days, depending on fitness. It covers a length of 85 km and the descent into the Canyon is only allowed for hikers doing the trail. Day-visitors are not allowed to climb into the Canyon.
Itinerary
Day 1
Windhoek to Ai -AisWe start our tour just after breakfast at 7:30 as we leaving the cement jungle of Windhoek behind us and continue South to Ai-ais hot spring resort. We stop en route for lunch (own expense). Ai-Ais, which means "burning water" in one of the local languages, refers to the sulfurous hot springs which are found in this area. One of these springs has its eye within the camp. Ai-Ais lies at the southern end of the Fish River conservation area and is where you will finish the Fish River hiking trail.
Day 2 - 6
Hiking the Fish River CanyonWe start our day with an early breakfast and leaving Ai-Ais after that to Hobas where we start our hike down the Fish river canyon. The Fish River Canyon commences at Seeheim, at the lower course of the River. The Canyon is 161 km long, 27 km wide, and up to 550m deep. The Fish River Canyon ends at Ai-Ais and the river then flows into the Orange River, the border to South Africa. The Fish River Hiking Trail can be conducted during the months April – September and can be completed within 4 to 5 days, depending on fitness. It covers a length of 85 km and the descent into the Canyon is only allowed for hikers doing the trail.
Day 7
Ai Ais to SossusvleiWe leaving just after breakfast and continue our journey to Sossusvlei. We stop en route for lunch (own expense). at Helmeringhausen. From here we continue to Sossusvlei where we relax and enjoy a hardy dinner.
